Does anyone commenting on this gifset understand what Bryke was saying at all?

They weren’t saying “she can’t love herself without her cool powers.” They say it right there, she feels as though she’s screwed up Aang’s legacy because of this loss, because she’s had it drilled into her for seventeen years that she’s the Avatar because of her bending, because there’s a connection to elements and probably little things she did unconsciously in her everyday life that are now gone, she feels as though she’s let down a line of great and amazing people and just for one day, for one day she wants some time to mourn it has nothing to do with her powers it has to do with her identity and the identity people have given her

I’m sorry, but even if Bryke doesn’t always have the best execution in the tales they tell, their messages are right, and since the majority of us are over fifteen we should be able to watch a story that shows rather than directly tells.

I’m not disagreeing with you on the fact that Bryke tried to send a great message through LOK, but the problem was that it wasn’t clear. Maybe it’s only me, but I didn’t get this message at all (and I rewatched the series at least three times), I only saw the connection after seeing this gifset.

And the thing about storytelling is that you have to make sure the message gets to reader, or in this case, viewer. No, that might not necessarily mean “dumbing down” the content/execution, but you can’t give someone an apple and expect them to understand the history surrounding that apple without any background knowlege. Maybe that’s not the best metaphor for this, and maybe I’m not as qualified to be talking about this seeing as I’ve only ever been on the receiving end of storytelling.

I’m not going to deny that what I’ve seen from the extras isn’t cool and brilliant. But as a viewer, and maybe this is a bit presumptuous, but I should be able to get that brilliance from watching the show, without watching the extras. Or, if I do watch the extras, it should clarify what themes I’ve noticed or solidify those concepts, rather than introduce entirely new ideas that weren’t in the original content material.

#she never is shown learning to love herself!! #she is terrified of losing her bending at the beginning and is terrified of it at the end #and thats perfectly justified #but they dont show her learning to see herself outside her bending and status as the avatar #!!! #the whole plot is resolved by aang coming #but she doesnt resolve it herself #and she shouldnt have done it entirely on her own to be sure #but if they wanted to show her loving herself before loving mako #they should have shown more from her #and more of her learning to accept herself and like herself and be herself #without basing everything off of past avatars #and without basing everything off of what she has been told to do as the avatar #they showed that her entire identity is based off of being the avatar #and if they wanted to change anything they should have shown her gaining an identity as a person

These tags are excellent.

See THIS is what I’m really excited for and hopeful comes through into the following seasons! Korra’s not done growing and learning to love herself! It should be an ongoing process throughout the seasons imo, and I can’t wait to see it.

Okay, a little about me. I am Acro - 21-year old female, heteroromantic asexual, artist / amateur scientist [specifically regarding biology], and violin mantis person. Majoring in anthropology. I also like to represent myself with something that is essentially an anthropomorphic, okapi-themed lamp, for no reason other than it's fun.

I sometimes post art I've done. I like invertebrates, natural oddities, surreal / fantasy-type art, robots, guys without faces / with partly obscured faces, and things that have a somewhat old-fashioned vibe to them, among other things, so expect to see a bit of that around. Fandoms I post about / reblog include BBC Sherlock, Doctor Who, Avatar: the Last Airbender, Avatar: the Legend of Korra, Shane Acker's 9, Harry Potter, Transformers: Prime / MTMTE / misc. other continuities, and sprinklings of others here and there. I also reblog things about feminism and gender / sexual identities and other debate-sparking topics, so if that kind of thing annoys you then here's your warning before you hit the "follow" button.
